Drug Cards: Content Update 1.06 - Metarminol

Drugs: Metaraminol

Glossary Terms: Autoregulation

Another interesting update this week. Metaraminol, a fairly ubiquitous vasopressor, isn't licensed in the UK. Make sure you consult local policy before using it, especially with regards to IV infusions since there is little official guidance on them and Drug Cards doesn't include information on IV infusions of this drug.

Autoregulation is an important concept to understand for anyone giving CVS depressing drugs, like anaesthetics.

Drug Cards: Content Update 1.05 - Mannitol

Drugs: Mannitol

Glossary Terms: Monro-Kellie hypothesis

This update is interesting. Is Mannitol really a drug? It has no pharmacological effects after all.

The answer is - yes it is. It has physiological effects even though those these aren't receptor mediated. It's interesting stuff.

Make sure you read the dosing notes; they can be a little confusing. Always consult with local policies regarding the use of Mannitol and if you've never used it before, get expert and experienced help.
